Instructor Heather Crook leads her ENG 101 students into their final portion of the course by asking them to create Op-Ed pieces that incorporate key argumentative strategies. Heather uses this genre to catalyze students both to be “provocative and [to] succinctly argue particular points of view on issues that are dominating the headlines.”
She begins the unit by reminding students of common argumentative strategies like the three classical appeals, premises and conclusions (as well as their equivalent textual markers), and the timeliness of a topic. She provides practical tools with practical examples for practical writing.
